In case you missed the party and art show for FIM’s annual November Art + Design Issue, here are two new pieces by Aki Shiroza, whose large-scale work was originally showcased there. A graduate student and researcher at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science (who works with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), Shiroza has been creating a series that uses various marine specimen blown up from microscopic displays and digitally manipulated with vivid color to offer an enhanced view of these underwater creatures.

Don’t know what to do this weekend? For $59 per person, the South Beach Food Tour takes foodies to five to seven restaurants in South Beach, tasting bite-sized portions of each restaurant’s signature dish along the way. A tour guide leads the way, with interesting tidbits about South Beach history all along as you move from location to location. The tour takes place on Fridays and Saturdays at 6pm, and lasts for about two hours. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes.
In true democratic fashion, the fine folks at the Ritz-Carlton want to make the feasting pleasures of the South Beach Wine & Food Festival accessible to everyone. Granted, tickets to events like the annual Burger Bash can be pricey (and sold out), so we highly recommend you check out the delectable alternatives at the Ritz, all helmed by Josh Becker (the actual Burger Bash chef and the hotel’s chef de cuisine) and happening oceanfront at the Dilido Beach Club, February 25-26 (5pm-12am), each for one small fee, with deelish watermelon sangria to keep you refreshed: Thursday, enjoy signature foie gras torchon burgers ($18); Friday features pork two ways, as whole pigs are roasted in a La Caja China and pork loins are grilled over coal with chimichurri sauce and roasted apples ($20); and Saturday wraps it up with a lovely, all-you-can-eat chilled seafood display ($28). Plus there will be high-tech telescopes for you to peep through and see what all the fuss is about at the official food fest tents ahead.

FIM FASHION: Magic Garden / March 2011

We must give credit where credit is due. Recently retired French Vogue Editor-in-Chief Carine Roitfeld wore the designers she heralded like no other. Unlike her American counterpart, Roitfeld’s look was anything but orchestrated. Her style was often as unkempt as her unruly hair or those signature bushy eyebrows. In the end her aesthetic fiercely translated onto the runways where her personal take on fashion influenced the designers she nurtured during her decade at Vogue. Something tells us, however, that although Roitfeld may be finished with Vogue, she most likely is not done with fashion. - Anetta Nowosielska / Photography: Hedi Slimane (courtesy of New York magazine)

NEW JANUARY 2011 ISSUE!PHOTOGRAPHY BY RODRIGO RUIZSTYLING BY...

NEW JANUARY 2011 ISSUE!
PHOTOGRAPHY BY RODRIGO RUIZ
STYLING BY ANETTA NOWOSIELSKA

FIM HOLIDAYS: NYE at Acqualina and Gift Giveaway!

If staying in the tropics for New Year’s Eve, the idea should be to steer clear from the untamed brouhaha and find yourself a more refined location with good food, dapper gents and stylish dames, a nice view, and plenty to imbibe. For that, we recommend the Acqualina Resort & Spa on Sunny Isles Beach, where their NYE soirée includes food, live music and a DJ, drinks, dancing and entertainment under the moonlight. Options include a five-course seated gourmet dinner for $250; a buffet for $200; or $95 for open bar if you prefer to eat elsewhere. Call 305/918-6860 for reservations.

Additionally, the fine folks at Acqualina have offered us a gift certificate for one lucky FIM reader to receive a free 50-minute Swedish massage at ESPA, their renowned, 20,000-square-foot oceanfront spa. We want to hear your ideas, so you must come up with a compelling response to the following question in order to win: What specific subject(s) — related to fashion, art & culture, design, architecture, food & drink, health, travel, or luxury lifestyle — would you like to see featured in FIM (that hasn’t been already)? The best response will be chosen by our editors in early January (and may actually turn into a feature in an upcoming issue).

Please email your responses to osommereyns@floridainternationalmag.com (and CC blopez@floridainternationalmag.com too). Happy Holidays to all!

Terms like “organic” and “farm-to-table” have been buzzing in the South Florida culinary scene for quite some time now (see, most prominently, Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink in the Miami Design District), although bona fide restaurant options in these categories are still lacking. Two new places, however, are certainly promising: Market 17 in Fort Lauderdale and Sustain in Miami.

The first is located at the Portside Yachting Center in another one of those nondescript commercial complexes that seem to plague the South Florida sprawl. Inside is a vast, yet elegant space with tasteful artwork throughout. And the mouthwatering menu, which changes seasonally and extends various elaborate, flavor-forward dishes, speaks for itself. Notable local meat options include, for instance, a grilled Okeechobee filet with sautéed broccolini, crispy potato, thyme, garlic, shallot rosti and caramelized apricot, and a grilled Ocala grassfed beef ribeye steak with potato and sage gratin, glazed root veggies, roasted cipollini onions, veal glace, red wine compound butter, and a cabernet reduction. We recommend you try the chef’s tasting menus paired with wine.

As for Sustain, located near Mercadito in Midtown Miami, the emphasis is obviously on sustainable foods, with a menu divided by “Bites”, “Starters”, “Salads”, “Mains” and “For Two”. Highlights include their “50 Mile Salad” (a delectable combination of wood oven roasted beets, pickled onions, Paradise Farms brassica, and feta cheese) and their extra-tasty burger, served rare, with smoked bacon, cheddar cheese and caramelized onions — two dishes whose flavors pleasantly burst on the palette. Also, don’t miss the BBQ grilled quail; a delicious yellowtail snapper with roasted Jerusalem artichokes, slow-cooked tomatoes and olives in an ocean broth; a porchetta pork loin rolled in herbs, wrapped in pork belly, and slow-roasted for 12 hours; and interesting desserts like a peanut-butter-and-jelly flan and a to-die-for pecan pie with chocolate ice cream. On the other hand, the décor is somewhat austere, mostly due to the unwelcoming white lights (at least during dinner hours). Warmer hues would be much more inviting.

After eating at both these restaurants, we can conclude that organic, farm-to-table meals simply taste better, whether they’re healthier or more sustainable or not. We hope to see more places like these opening throughout the state.

You’ve likely seen your fair share of creative eccentrics at the Wynwood art-walk. Now, here are a couple of oddballs captured at an art-walk in Buenos Aires, courtesy of FIM friend and photographer, Ali Miranda. [Ed.
Port-au-Prince native Jhon Charles was precociously sentient enough to internalize images and already render them on paper as a child. Following the horrible Haiti earthquake tragedy this year, Charles recalled a multitude of children running around the shelter tents and was inspired to depict them in a positive light — playing games, mirthfully. Despite their poverty and struggles, Charles sees them as the future of his country and intends on reinforcing their spirit with his work. Part of his Soul of Haiti series, the piece is on view at the Haitian Heritage Museum in the Miami Design District, along with other acrylic paintings and his darker, black-and-white charcoal drawings. On view through March 31, 10am-5pm Mon-Tue, 7-10pm Second Saturdays, 305/371-5988.

FIM STYLE: Roberto Giordano Salon & Spa
