FIM FASHION: Monique Péan

Monique Pean pink tourmaline ring

With Fashion Week around the corner, Anetta and I are busy sifting through the mass of shows and finalizing our New York schedule. On top of my list is Monique Péan, who launched her socially responsible, eponymous jewelry line in 2006. Using such diverse (and conflict-free) materials as fossilized walrus ivory and buffalo horn alongside the more conventional diamonds and gold, Péan is making a name for herself as both an artist and environmental pioneer. Look for her at Lincoln Center on September 14th. Above: 18k recycled gold ring set with natural pink tourmaline and white diamond accents. - Brittany Lopez

FIM DESIGN: 17 PRISMs for Robb & Stucky

PB Gardens home Bolinder

Congrats, once again, to our creative friends at Robb & Stucky for winning another enviable multiplicity of design awards at the recent PRISM competition ceremony, hosted by the Gold Coast Builders Association. That’s 11 awards for their Boca Raton showroom and six for the Palm Beach Gardens location. Bravo! Above: a living room — with quite an airy, Wright-ish, retro ’70s feel — by R&S designer Derick Bolinder for a private residence in Palm Beach Gardens snagged a Silver PRISM.

FIM PREVIEW: Fabien Baron Interview

Fabien Baron

We’re almost giddy about this one — an exclusive interview in our September issue with Fabien Baron, the visionary Editorial Director of Interview magazine and founder of Baron & Baron, a design firm that has created countless iconic campaigns for major fashion labels, amongst other things. Baron tells us about his passion for design and fashion (“I am simply an addict”), working with Madonna on her SEX book (“She’s someone who knows what she wants and will never give up”), his new Calvin Klein campaigns (“We’ve taken one girl, the amazing Lara Stone, and used her across all the lines, which sends a really strong message”), and his controversial 2008 Eva Mendes/Calvin Klein TV commercial (“A sexy image of a woman is much less shocking and offensive than the violence we see in the news every day”). Above: Fabien Baron. FIM DESIGN: Intelligent Machines

Outrace

If you’re going to be in London September 17-23, don’t miss Reed Kram and Clemens Weisshaar’s Outrace project, an ingenious feat of technology and design allowing the general public to take control of eight large-scale robots on loan from Audi’s manufacturing line and hence create three-dimensional light messages (short text messages transcribed into real-time light traces). Located on the bustling Trafalgar Square during the upcoming London Design Festival, these intelligent machines will give people the chance to impressively declare eternal love to significant others or emit forceful political statements through the installation itself or via this website. - Omar Sommereyns

FIM DESIGN: Frank Gehry on the New NWS Building

NWS Campus model

Last chance to pick up a copy of our annual Design issue, on newsstands now. Among others, we interview Frank Gehry, the LA-based, Pritzker Prize-winning architect whose vision consistently overflows with imagination, movement and wide-eyed creativity. He discusses his collaboration with Michael Tilson Thomas and his design for the 100,641-square-foot New World Symphony complex, scheduled to open in Miami Beach in January of next year. Plus, he sheds light on his views of green design, just in time to clear things up after detractors throughout the blogosphere lashed out at him for allegedly dismissing LEED and green building. Check out this PBS interview for more on that. Above: a model view of the new NWS campus. Bottom: the interior of the flexible performance hall, which features large acoustically reflective sails; Gehry’s dizzying Dancing House in Prague; Frank Gehry sitting on a cardboard chair of his own design. - Omar Sommereyns

Psychic Chasms

FIM BEATS…”Local Joke” — a dreamy new remix by Florida’s own MillionYoung of Neon Indian’s original track released on their Psychic Chasms album (which features a fetching modernist cover, pictured above). A perfect start to the weekend indeed. :)

FIM EATS: Luxurious Feast

The Biltmore Hotel 1

Biltmore Lobster Two Ways

Biltmore amigos

It may sound just a tad too hedonistic, but fine dining can be enjoyed with both wine and hard liquor. No kidding. At a recent dinner at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, the good folks at Partida Tequila and Folio Fine Wine Partners hosted several guests for a multiple-course meal that featured two plates for each course so that one could be tasted with the vino and the other with the agave liquor — needless to say, ‘twas a culinary affair that left us unquestionably caroused (and one that made it rather tricky to recall what we’d just eaten too). Above (top to bottom): the grand Biltmore, seen from the back; lobster two ways, with flavors leaning toward either wine or tequila; left to right: Partida founder Gary Shansby, Chef Philippe Ruiz of the Biltmore’s Palme d’Or, and Michael Mondavi, son of the late Robert Mondavi and founder of Folio Fine Wine Partners (we recommend their silky and delicate Isabel Mondavi Pinot Noir).
